Comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy image

I recently took some images of comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy with my Canon 1100D DSLR from Stockport Observatory.

I’m learning and experimenting with the camera and processing software mostly for the purpose of using it for variable star photometry.

The following was taken on Dec 21 2014 with a USM 100mm EF f2.0 lens piggy-backed on a Meade LX-90 telescope in alt-az (vs equatorial) mode. Click to enlarge.

Two stacked (using IRIS) 30 second images at ISO 3200, with contrast, brightness, colour balance adjustment and cropping using The GIMP.

There are plenty of better images of the comet taken by others of course, but this is mine. 🙂 I plan to take more images in the coming days as the comet brightens.
